Vancomycin is one of only a few antibiotics available to treat patients infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species. Vancomycin is a unique glycopeptide structurally unrelated to any currently available antibiotic and has a unique mode of action inhibiting the second stage of cell wall synthesis of susceptible bacteria.
