Acarbose is an α-glucosidase inhibitor that improves glycemic control by decreasing the intestinal absorption of glucose, thereby decreasing the elevation of postprandial blood glucose. Acarbose can potentiate the hypoglycemic effects of sulfonylureas or insulin.
